In 1929, members of the Andrew Mygatt Post of the Veterans of Foreign War in New Milford Connecticut felt that there was a growing need to provide ambulance service to the town of New Milford and its surrounding communities. This dedicated group of men purchased the ambulance corporation's first Nash ambulance, and pursued a charter for the service.

Shortly after the VFW established the ambulance service, the service separated from the VFW and became the New Milford Community Volunteer Ambulance Corp. The corporation provided both emergency and non-emergency transfers to the towns of New Milford, Bridgewater, Roxbury, Washington, Sherman, Warren, and Kent until those towns developed their own ambulance services.

Today New Milford Community Ambulance is an all volunteer service with approximately 65 members. The service provides 911 emergency medical service to the largest town in the state of Connecticut covering 64.5 square miles with two BLS ambulances, and one BLS first responder vehicle. The volunteers cover over 1600 calls per year.

The service is currently certified at the mobile intensive care defib/epi level. A regional paramedic service based at New Milford Hospital, provides advanced life support.

The corporation has purchased oxygen/trauma first in bags for all of it's EMT's and MRT's to respond directly to the scene of a call with the ability to initiate treatment before the ambulance or paramedic arrives. The ambulance corporation is also devoted to providing all of its defibrillator certified members with AED's. So far the corporation has placed 37 AED's in service in its member's private vehicles through out the town, and has saved six lives with the use of the AED's.

New Milford Ambulance Corporation currently runs two ambulances, a 1999 Horton Type III ambulance and a 2003 Braun Type III ambulance. The ambulance service also provides its members with a 2003 GMC Envoy first responder vehicle. This vehicle is fully stocked with emergency medical equipment. Members of the volunteer staff are able to take the vehicle home and respond directly to the scene of a call.

New Milford Ambulance is one of the first services to provide all of its members with EMS turn out gear. The gear provides protection from the elements, bloodborne pathogens, and has fire protection as well. Members of the service are required to have their gear on board the ambulance while on duty.

New Milford Community Ambulance is one of the oldest volunteer ambulance services in the state of Connecticut. The volunteer staff shows a lot of pride in their service, and is dedicated to providing the community with high quality emergency services at no charge to the patient. The corp. continually maintains their skill level with frequent training sessions and drills with other services.

New Milford Ambulance works in conjunction with New Milford Hospital, New Milford Police Dept. Water Witch Hose Co., Northville Fire Dept., Gaylordsville Fire Dept., and multiple mutual aid departments from surrounding towns.
